On August 4, 1999, Daryl Doran, one
of the most recognized soccer names in St. Louis soccer
history, signed on as the first player, head coach and general
manager of the new St. Louis Steamers of the World Indoor
Soccer League (WISL).
Doran,
a 17-year indoor soccer veteran, enters his eighteenth season
as one of only three players to have played for each of
the soccer franchises in St. Louis soccer history- St. Louis
Steamers (1982-1988), St. Louis Storm (1989-1992) and St.
Louis Ambush (1992-1999).
Before
signing with the Steamers, Doran most recently served a
seven-year stint as player/coach for the St. Louis Ambush,
a member of the National Professional Soccer League (NPSL).
Midway through the 1992-1993 Ambush season, Doran took on
the role as head coach while continuing his role as one
of the teamıs top defenders. When Doran took on the dual
role, he proved to be a pioneer in the sport, becoming one
of the first to successfully make the transition from player
to player/coach.
During
his first full season as head coach, Doran led the Ambush
to the 1994 NPSL Finals. Despite falling short of reaching
the title, Doranıs tireless efforts to win an NPSL Championship
paid off. Two seasons into his role as Ambush Head Coach,
Doran led the team to the 1995 NPSL Championship title,
bringing St. Louis its first professional soccer title in
the city's history. Doranıs storybook season continued when
he earned the most coveted honor as a coach, receiving the
award as the 1994-1995 NPSL Coach of the Year. With five
division titles and four conference championship titles,
Doran's coaching statistics rank him among the NPSL's all-time
leaders in career total wins (202), regular season wins
(166) and playoff wins (36).
In
addition to being one of indoor soccerıs premier head coaches,
Doran is also one of the sportıs top all-time performers
on the field. Beginning his professional career in 1982,
he has accumulated over 17 years of professional indoor
soccer experience. Entering an unprecedented 18th season,
Doran has played in approximately 700 regular season games,
over 90 playoff games and been nominated to 12 All-Star
squads, earning the 1997 All-Star MVP award in 1997. A former
NPSL Defender of the Year (1997) and six-time All-NPSL selection
(1992-1999), he is among the Ambush all-time leaders in
games played (253), goals (181), assists (260), points (609),
shots (838) and blocks (344). Prior to joining the Ambush,
Doran spent three years with the St. Louis Storm (MSL),
one year with the Los Angeles Lazers (MISL) and six years
with St. Louis Steamers. As a midfielder for the Steamers,
Doran tallied 61 goals, 84 assists and earned an All-Star
selection.
A
St. Louis native, Doran graduated from Christian Brothers
College (CBC) High School where he earned Parade All-American
honors. During his senior season at CBC, he was selected
by the St. Louis Steamers in the Major Indoor Soccer Leagueıs
(MISL) draft. Doran spent one season playing for the St.
Louis University Billikens prior to joining the original
Steamers in 1982, fulfilling a dream to play professional
soccer in his hometown.
